Banana Pi R3 vs RPi4 for router

Looking at the specs, the R3 might be a good alternative to RPi4 for a router/SQM. Wondering if people out there are using one in this role on Gigabit connection. How does the R3 perform with SQM? Any stability or support issues? I realize it is fairly recently supported.

Really appealing to me are the multiple LAN ports. RPi4 needs a USB dongle. I think the CPU is a wash as recent RPi4 runs A72 @ 1.80 GHz (easily overclocked to 2.0 GHz with good cooling). 802.11ax is a nice to have.

It's indeed a very tempting device, if it wouldn't be sold as a naked board without case/ psu, pigtails and antennas - actually getting it working easily doubles the price (not that the RPi would be much better in this regard, especially right now)…

Sinovoip, the company behind it, does offer it in bundles. The pricing isn't actually that bad. Doesn't double the price by any means.

If a vendor buys those in bulk quantities, it doesn't need to be expensive - if we need to buy for a single device, it would (and you'd probably end up with bad antennas or pigtails on the first attempt (especially the 5 GHz antennas)).

Don't buy it with the PSU.
Got the EU plug and it has horrible coil whine.
The case is pretty neat.
Can't make any statements about the antennas.

I got BPI-R3 complete package for about 1 week, here is my personal quick review.
Antenna: Fair. speed drops slightly 5 meters away without obstruction.
Case: Perfect fit. Some people complain for no ventilation holes, put a laptop cooling pad underneath and problem solved.
Openwrt: Official installation/image had issue with transfer image to EMMC. I compiled the Openwrt snapshot image and the installation was pretty easy by copy SD image to every other storage.
Performance: iperf3 LAN to LAN = 950Mbps+, iperf3 Wifi AX to LAN 850-900Mbps (within 2 meters)

Openwrt open source wireless drivers worked out of the box.
I use it as my main router at home, I only need 802.11r, mac filter, SQM, USB storage. No additional features are necessary for me so not tested.

Incredible, it seems like a good option to me, I look forward to more information about your experience with the router.

had it for about 2 weeks as main router (with 3 dumb AP), very stable.
discovered so far, it seems that SQM doesn't work properly. I set speed limit but no effect, also tried Disable/Enable Soft/Hard offload flow, still no effect.

I also bought a Redmi AX6000, which is almost same specs as BPI-R3, if R3 is too expensive then you may consider AX6000.

but BPI-R3 have 6ghz support and ax6000 no, is that true?

@bricco1981 Where can I check if it has 6Ghz support or not? I have both of them running now.
A quick check on Wifi settings, both of them are up to 165CH (5825Mhz) only.

The AX6000 is about 2/3rds the price of a BPI-R3. If you are really tight for cash, then yes, but for the extra few dollars, you do get a lot more with the R3. 2GB RAM, m.2 pcie, 2.5gbit, and 8gb emmc (plus nand and nor if you want it).

No, neither of them have 6GHz. But the BPI-R3 can add it with a card. AsiaRF is coming out with m.2 key b+m WiFi 6e card.

@jamestien that is the 2.4 ghz.
so
iw phy1 info
@VA1DER thanks
also @jamestien can you show as i said
iw phy1 info of the two devices please?

@bricco1981 Anything that can be improved?

that's strange do you have same country code on the two device? the redmi ax 6000 seems have no rules in reg.db

I use driver default on both device.

The strange thing is, when I connect my iPad Air 2 to Redmi AX6000 (AX) I can only get about 120Mbps, no matter how close it is to AX6000.

**Check this in your wifi settings**

Try to set the DTIM interval to 3, always use powers lower than the maximum power, especially if you are always using your Ipad or wireless devices near the router, because a high or very low power makes that the modulation that can be achieved in the wireless link is not the highest, try not to use any DFS channels, these are very problematic, do not use channel widths higher than 80 MHz in the 5GHz band, make sure you have the short preamble box checked and WMM mode, try using WPA2-PSK encryption if you are using a mixed mode with WPA3 or just WPA3.

I wanted to ask in which country you live and how long it took to get the Banana Pi R3, in pictures it looks very good option, it has SFP port, but I live in a country where Movistar is used, I have no experience with these devices and I do not know which module could serve to connect the fiber directly into the Banana Pi R3.

Thank you, I use default when I don't know which is the best option.

I live in Philippines, I opted for FEdex shipping which only took 3 days (exclude local shipping, from seller to FEdex collection center) from China.
